Basotho, a South Countryman

(Chinese New Romance)

A paradise of paradise

The snow was gray.
The farther we went, the more desolate it became.
Suddenly I saw a green island in Blue Lake.
A surprise.
Take a pass to fly in the shadow of the sail.

Comments:

The small poem "South Country Bhasa" accomplished a spiritual transition from obscurity to surprise in a very simple manner. The following sentence-by-sentence explanation is provided for a comprehensive appreciation.

Explanation by sentence

"The snow is clear."
The first four words came from the air, indicating the geographical space - the Tibetan Plateau - with "snow" and setting the overall tone with "far away." The sky is the blue color of the sky, which is translated into vastness and profoundness. The blankness is ambiguous and endless. Together, the two words write about the remoteness of the plateau, the limitlessness of space and the silence of color, and set an extremely large and slightly oppressive background for the whole word.

"The farther we go, the more desolate it gets."
The sentence uses three "over" words to create a sense of progressive linear propulsion. Not only is the spatial distance extended, but the psychological feeling deepened. "Doing" is the action, "far" is the result, and "desolate" is the feeling. The three words folded together to mimic the rhythm of the journey, and to write about the sense of loneliness of people on the journey and gradually becoming invisible. This is a typical "preconcise" style of writing to prepare for the next twist.

"Suddenly I saw a green island in Blue Lake."
"Sudden" is the structural hub of the whole sentence and the whole word, and it suddenly turns and breaks the desolate silence of the preceding sentence. A "sudden" word describes the surprise and visual shock of an unexpected discovery. The term "Blue Lake" evokes the mineral-blue characteristic of the waters of Basotho, while the term "Green Island" describes the lush, green islands of the lake. Blue and green reflected each other, cold and warm, and suddenly a warm jade appeared on a pale gray-and-white background. This is the central image of the word, and it is a complete reversal of the "desolation" of the preceding words.

"Surprise."
A short two-word sentence that is independently rhymed and strong. Procedurally, this is the two words required by the "South Country" sign, but the words are used extremely boldly - without any modifications, and without a doubt. This de-rhetorical, direct shouting instead produces a sincere force, as if a blurb of admiration pushed the emotions of the moment of discovery of the Blue Lake and the Green Island to a climax.

"Take a pass to fly in the shadow of the sail."
The sentence is entered in a word with a strong sense of modernity called "catching up." At first it may seem risky, but the details are wonderful. It incorporates a contemporary sense of travel ritual into classical landscapes, featuring scenes of travelers taking pictures and unwinding their moods amid the azure skies. The word "sail shadow" can either be a literal representation of the boats on the lake or a poetic representation, adding a stirring atmosphere to this sacred lake. "Let go" refers to modern playthings such as drones and kites, and also means the relaxation and release of the mind among the lake and the mountains. This sentence ultimately confines the grand natural landscape to human activities, completing the return from the landscape to the human.

Combined appreciation

The core artistic charm of this small piece is that it uses the theme of "discovery" to construct an elaborate aesthetic surprise.

First, structural upheavals and abrupt changes. The whole word uses a highly dramatic "Dementian" structure. The first three sentences set the momentum, and the picture is oppressive and lonely, which is "the mountain is heavy and the water is without a way." The words "Suddenly," which turned out to be "a village in the shadow of a willow." This ups and downs emotional curve perfectly simulates the real-life travel experience of suddenly encountering a stunning lake after a long journey on a remote plateau, allowing readers to instantly empathize with the intense visual and mental shock.

Second, creativity in color composition. The lyricist is like an oil painter, intentionally putting on contrasts of colors. The silvery white of the "snow" and the greyish green of the "far away" make up a cold, almost monochrome background; The "Blue Lake" and the "Green Island" stood out with a high saturation cold emerald color and became the absolute focus of the picture. This visual jump from "colorless" to "colored," from "dead" to "alive" is the most infectious artistic technique of the word.

Third, the intersection and game between classical and modern contexts. The inclusion of the word "card card" is undoubtedly one of the most controversial and timely references to the term. From a purely classical aesthetic point of view, it breaks the implicit meaning; But in terms of the true state of contemporary travel, it is exceptionally true, giving this landscape phrase a distinctly time-honored imprint. More interestingly, the combination of "check-in" and "let go" inadvertently constitutes a common modern-day ambivalence in travel - both the desire to "capture" the scenery with the lens and the desire for spiritual "freedom" in the scenery. This inner tension gives this seemingly pale little word a deep meaning to chew on.

Fourth, the sincere beauty of the word "surprise." The emotion of the whole word is revealed and unconcealed. The two words "surprise" convey the strongest emotions in the simplest language. This return to reality has a visceral power. It is not deliberately deep, not deliberately veiled, like the sunshine of a plateau, bright and serene.

Overall, "South Country Passport" is a traveling phrase that successfully captures the instant feelings of a journey. It inherits the classic lyrical model of Chinese classical landscape poetry "openness" and brings new aesthetic vitality with its bold and straightforward modern vocabulary, which frames the amazing experience of Basotho's discovery journey as a timeless encounter with the soul.
